Statically Determinate Beam Section Internal Force Testing Apparatus Delivered to Jining Vocational and Technical College

The Invisible Internal Force Problem

In structural mechanics teaching, students calculate shear force and bending moment on paper every week, yet these internal forces are never something they actually see. A beam looks unchanged as loads hang on it, so the abstract idea that a hidden shear and bending moment lives inside every cross section is hard to make concrete. Jining Vocational and Technical College needed teaching equipment that turns this invisible calculation into a direct measurement. MicroNewton delivered its self developed MST01 statically determinate beam section internal force testing apparatus for this purpose.

Cut Replace Balance in Physical Form

The apparatus is built around one bold teaching idea: it physically does what the section method describes on paper. Each test beam is sawed through at the chosen cross section. A moment arm bridge holds the two halves together and routes the internal force to a precision load cell, so the beam stays standing while the internal force becomes a readable external signal. There are two interchangeable test beams, one for section shear force and one for section bending moment.

When students hang slotted weights at holes along the beam, twenty or more loading points spaced twenty millimeters apart let them place single or combined loads wherever they like. A 10.1 inch touchscreen reads out the measured force in real time, and the same data can be sent to a computer for plotting.

Three experiments make the theory land. First, students load one weight and watch the measured bending moment at the fixed section change as the load moves closer or farther, comparing against the textbook moment equation. Second, they hang two weights at different positions, calculate support reactions by taking moments, and check whether the measured bending moment matches the superposition result. Third, they read the section shear force directly from the shear beam and compare it with the shear obtained from equilibrium. Across all three, measured values track theoretical values within a small teaching tolerance, and the gap between them becomes an exercise in error analysis.

Students and Knowledge

The apparatus serves civil engineering, mechanical engineering, engineering mechanics, and bridge related programs. These students move beyond formula memorization and actually work with the section method: cut the beam, replace the removed part with internal forces, and apply static equilibrium. They learn the physical meaning of shear force and bending moment, how support reactions follow from moment balance, how bending moment superposes under multiple loads, how to convert weight mass into load in newtons, and how experimental measurement compares against structural mechanics theory. The apparatus also doubles as a standalone data acquisition tool, leaving room for students to design their own small research tests.

Self Developed Design Behind the Device

The MST01 reflects MicroNewton's self development strength. Rather than asking students to trust a formula, we engineered a beam that is genuinely cut at the test section, with a moment arm bridge and matched load cells sized so that shear and bending moment read directly and accurately. The portal frame, adjustable supports, 20 millimeter loading grid, touchscreen acquisition, and overload protection were designed together so that swapping the shear beam for the moment beam, repositioning supports, and adding combined loads stays simple for classroom use. This is how we turn a textbook proof method into something students can hang weights on and watch happen.
