Multifunctional Material Mechanics Testing Apparatus Delivered to Yantai Ocean College

One Platform Instead of Many Single Function Stations

Yantai Ocean College needed a material mechanics teaching setup that could cover the core verification experiments of the standard mechanics course without dedicating a separate floor space to each test. MicroNewton delivered its self developed multifunctional material mechanics testing apparatus, built on a main unit plus modular fixtures and specimens. The idea is simple: one compact machine performs tension, compression, torsion, bending, bending torsion combination, compression bar stability, and equal strength beam experiments. Every module is independently enclosed, lightweight, and can be carried into an ordinary classroom, which suits teaching rooms of different sizes and budget conscious laboratory planning.

Following the Modules Through the Course

Starting from the main unit, students first fit the axial tension and compression module. Using round and rectangular grips, they pull and push specimens of acrylic, TPU, aluminum alloy, and steel, measuring load and strain to determine elastic modulus and Poisson ratio. The included strain gauges and displacement sensors feed readings to the 10.1 inch touchscreen.

Next they swap in the torsion module. A worm and wheel hand loader applies torque through spring collets, while an angle encoder and torque sensor record twist angle and torque. Students plot torsion member internal force and deformation, and observe shear stress distribution on circular and thin wall tube specimens.

The bending module comes next. Adjustable supports reconfigure into hinged or fixed positions, and students load rectangular aluminum, composite, POM, and silicone beams to measure deflection and bending stress, comparing beam materials and cross sections. From bending the platform extends into bending torsion combined deformation, where students study a thin wall tube under both loads, and into compression bar stability, where slender aluminum bars buckle under axial compression and the critical force is found directly. The equal strength beam module closes the mechanics sequence, letting students check stress distribution on a tapered beam against theory.

Across all modules the unit supports both electrical measurement with resistance strain gauges and strain rosettes and optical measurement through the optional WNT 2D DIC system, so students compare how point sensor data and full field optical displacement agree.

Students and Knowledge

The apparatus serves mechanical engineering, naval architecture, civil engineering, and applied technology students. These students move through the core material mechanics course on one consistent platform: axial tension and compression, elastic modulus and Poisson ratio, torsion and shear, beam bending deflection and stress, combined deformation, compression bar buckling and critical force, equal strength beam stress distribution, and the difference between electrical strain measurement and optical DIC measurement. Because the machine is compact and mobile, students in ordinary classrooms can run the same experiments that would otherwise need a dedicated materials testing hall.

Self Developed Design Behind the Platform

This apparatus reflects MicroNewton's self development strength: rather than offering one machine per experiment, we engineered a common main unit whose fixture, sensor, and specimen set can be swapped to match each topic in the curriculum. The frame, load paths, sensor channels, and touchscreen interface were designed together so that switching between tension, torsion, bending, and stability stays simple for students while keeping measurement error within five percent. This modular philosophy is how we compact a full mechanics laboratory onto a bench sized unit without sacrificing the experiments the course requires.
