The Gap That Called for a Custom Build

Dongguan University of Technology is an application oriented university with strengths in intelligent manufacturing and UAV engineering. The institution needed a wind tunnel that could test complete small unmanned aerial vehicle airframes rather than only small airfoil models. A standard teaching wind tunnel would not offer enough test section space for full UAV prototypes, and off the shelf systems could not accommodate the precision force and pressure measurement channels the university planned for its curriculum, competitions, and school enterprise research. MicroNewton responded with a customized F130S open return flow wind tunnel built around an oversized test section.

What Makes This Wind Tunnel Different

The standout feature is the oversized test section measuring 800 millimeters by 800 millimeters by 1000 millimeters long, large enough for full airframe testing of small UAVs. Airflow uniformity and stability across this wide cross section were specially optimized, with velocity field non uniformity below one percent, turbulence intensity in the core area at or below one percent, dynamic pressure stability deviation below one percent, and airflow deflection angle under half a degree. Wind speed ranges from 1 to 20 meters per second.

Unlike a basic teaching tunnel, this system integrates a high precision C3 to C5 three component force balance covering lift from 0 to 40 kilograms and drag from 0 to 20 kilograms, a 32 channel pressure acquisition system covering minus 3 to plus 3 kilopascals, and a high definition smoke based flow visualization system. An intelligent touchscreen platform runs measurement and control, and the model positioning control accuracy reaches 0.05 millimeters. These combined capabilities let students run complete wind tunnel experiments rather than simple demonstrations.

The experiments supported by this tunnel include lift and drag measurement on full UAV airframes, pressure distribution surveys across wings and bodies, smoke flow visualization around aircraft components, and aerodynamic optimization studies on small and medium UAV prototypes and intelligent vehicle models. The facility fills a real gap in the university, supporting curriculum experiments, graduation projects, student innovation competitions, university level research projects, and school enterprise cooperative UAV aerodynamic optimization.

Students and Knowledge Gained

Students in UAV engineering, mechanical engineering, and intelligent manufacturing programs use this tunnel to learn practical aerodynamic measurement. They work with lift and drag forces, pressure distribution, flow separation and boundary layer behavior, smoke flow visualization techniques, wind tunnel data acquisition and reduction, and aerodynamic optimization of real flight vehicles. The tunnel has become the core on campus platform for intelligent aircraft development and science innovation practice.

Beyond This Project: Custom Wind Tunnel Capability

The DGUT tunnel is one example of how MicroNewton designs and builds wind tunnels to a specific laboratory need. We tailor test section size, speed range, force balance capacity, channel count, and visualization method to the customer's application, whether that is airfoil teaching, building aerodynamics, UAV testing, or research scale experiments. Each custom wind tunnel is delivered with measurement and control software, data export, and the flow quality optimization expected of engineering grade equipment.

Discuss your custom wind tunnel requirement with MicroNewton. We design open return and closed return subsonic tunnels for universities, research institutes, and UAV laboratories.
