Building Practical Heat Transfer Education at Northwestern Polytechnical University

A modular set of heat transfer laboratory equipment has been delivered to Northwestern Polytechnical University to support practical teaching in heat transfer and thermal engineering. The package centers on the Heat Transfer Experiments Base Unit and adds modules for emissivity, natural convection and radiation, and radiant transfer, along with a wider range of heat transfer experiment modules.

A Modular Platform for Heat Transfer Teaching

The Heat Transfer Experiments Base Unit is the heart of the system. It provides the shared platform that different experiment modules connect to, so one laboratory setup can cover conduction, convection, radiation, thermal conductivity, and transient heat transfer — letting a single bench grow with the syllabus.

From Basic Theory to Measurement and Analysis

The system can be configured with modules such as the Linear Heat Conduction Experiment, Unsteady State Heat Transfer, and Conductivity of Liquids and Gases Experiment, helping students move from thermal theory into measurement and data analysis.

The linear conduction module introduces heat conduction and thermal conductivity; the unsteady-state module explores transient transfer in bodies of different shapes and conductivity; and the liquids and gases module lets students compare thermal conductivity across fluids.

Understanding Radiant Heat Transfer

The Radiant Transfer Experiments module focuses on thermal radiation and light transfer. Students explore how radiation varies with distance, source temperature, surface properties, and exposed area, and encounter the Stefan-Boltzmann Law, Kirchhoff's Law, the inverse square law, emissivity, absorptivity, and area factor.

Paired with the Emissivity, Natural Convection and Radiation module, it lets students compare heat transfer mechanisms and see how radiation and convection combine in real thermal processes.

Preparing Students for Thermal Engineering Applications

The combined equipment suits students in thermal engineering, energy and power engineering, mechanical engineering, and related fields. Through setup, measurement, calculation, and analysis, they build a working grasp of conduction, convection, radiation, thermal conductivity, emissivity, and transient transfer while developing practical lab and engineering-analysis skills.
